Due to our desire to maintain a natural herd, our stallion Hercules is free with the mares and breeds them naturally every year. All the foals are born at our stables (or in the surrounding fields) and usually we arrive at the stables in the mornings to find a new member greeting us! We also have been lucky enough to view a few of births though I prefer not to intrude during such important moments allowing the necessary bonding to occur between mother and young.
The foals are trained in the basic commands once they feel confident enough to leave their mothers side and be curious about their surroundings, usually around 2-4 weeks old. They are then slowly trained to lift all four legs on command, trot, walk and stop with a lead rope and they are also trained to be haltered, caught and tied up when necessary. The foals are sold after the age of 6 months, at which time we also give them their first yearly shots, immunizing them for tetanus and influenza. This gives you the possibility to see both parents as well as other offspring that we have from previous years at our stables. When sold, we are able to provide transportation for the foals to their new destination for an extra cost via our newly bought double horse trailer.
